On Jan. 11, Queen’s announced the introduction of a new graduate program in the arts to give students an edge in the ever-competitive industry.
The Dan School of Drama and Music has partnered with the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts to provide an Arts Management Graduate Diploma and a M.A. in Arts Leadership. The diploma is a six-week course which can then be extended into the Master’s degree, should the student wish to do so.
Coursework for the six-week diploma, which will be offered from May to June beginning this year, aims to address an identified lack of expertise in the arts industry, with lessons in skills such as revenue development, to be taught by top practitioners in the field, according to the new diploma’s website. The graduate diploma is buttressed by live-site analysis and inquiry-based research that equips students with skills necessary for success at an art organization.
The Master’s program is meant to build off of the knowledge learnt in an undergraduate program, whether it’s drama, film studies or other such fields. After completing the graduate diploma, students can apply to the Master’s program with the diploma recognized as part of the coursework.
According to Interim Dean of Arts and Science Gordon E. Smith, teaching for the programs will be done by of not only the Dan School but also the Smith School of Business and the Masters of Industrial Relations program, along with top practitioners in the field.
A major feature of the M.A. is the full-term practicum and culminating project. The placement sends students into art organizations to apply the knowledge they gained.
To help the students find their practicum placements, Genovese, Vanderhoof and Associates, a firm that places clients into arts organizations around North America, provides assistance. The project comes after the practicum and is meant to synthesize and build on the combined learning of the class and the real world.
The Master of Arts Leadership program will be taught partially online and may be entered without the graduate diploma. The hope among the programs’ creators is to address a lack of future leaders in the arts industry.
