Student urges others to Darfur
Dear Editors:
On Sunday Sept. 17, thousands of Canadians–young and old–gathered in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver for rallies connected to the Global Day for Darfur. The global initiative, aimed at raising awareness for the massive crimes against humanity occurring in Darfur, saw rallies and vigils take place in more than 50 cities worldwide.
The global media coverage and governmental response was astounding. In fact, there was a noticeable change in the coverage of the day’s events as media seemed to be taking on part of the responsibility to end the crisis in Darfur, Sudan.
It’s only when the media, and in particular the campus press, decides that thousands of people dying every month is just as worthy as daily news, sports, and entertainment coverage that enough Canadian students will be mobilized.
We are looking for campus media to help take the lead in raising student awareness of Darfur beyond the low level it is currently at.

Proud parent praises Journal
Dear Editors:
It was a real treat to grab a copy of your Sept. 8 Frosh Week edition for the long drive home. We had just been shooed out of our daughter’s Waldron Tower dorm room–having just dropped off her saxophone. She was going to be auditioning with for the Queen’s Bands.
Later in the week, I found out she made it while the whole time I was afraid she was going to give up music entirely to pursue a chemistry degree! Much to our surprise, on the eighth page, out of how many potential frosh, was her picture—she was dancing the night away at the mid-week frosh gathering.
Furthermore, in that issue was your great article on one of her favourite bands, Bedouin Soundclash. It was comforting to know that she could be inhabiting one of the very rooms that the band , Eon or Jay, did just a few years ago.
Another coincidence is that her brother has moved into a house on Earl Street just as the had to move out. We know what a headache fixing up a place can be so will bear with the start up challenges you are having.
We do, however, hope to see some photos and recent issues on your website before too long!
Our daughter is going to have a great time at Queen’s as long as she fits in her studies!
Have a great year!
