Fashion Friday
Oh, spring—that wonderful season of warmer sunshine, melting snow and blossoming flowers, when nature begins to renew itself. In keeping with the theme of the season, it is also the time to make some serious changes to last year’s spring wardrobe. Although it may not look or feel like spring quite yet, it’s the perfect time to get a headstart on the trends of spring 2006.
If you’re looking to stock your wardrobe, you’ll need to know which palette will make you ooze style. Many punchy and bright colours will be making brief appearances, but the leading shade this spring is pristine white. The bronze glow I mentioned in last week’s column will look fabulous with your whites.
The main colors you’ll want to splash onto the staple shade of white are deep magenta, bright cranberry, fresh cobalt blue and delicious avocado green.
But before you hurry out to purchase a get-up of head-to-toe magenta, think less is more. Avoid throwing these bright colours together in one eye-popping outfit. Instead, use them as mere accents.
When it comes to refreshing your closet this spring, simply add a few key items. The top three staples you’ll have to have this spring are lace, eyelet and Bermuda shorts.
Lace has made a huge comeback since the days of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” tour. The once-tacky fabric has returned with an elegant, soft appeal. Big designers such as Balenciaga, Dior and Dolce and Gabbana have included lace in their spring lines. This spring the idea is to look feminine, not gaudy.
Similar to lace, eyelet has a reputation for being conservative and dowdy. But the fabric is back and will add texture to the classic lines this spring. It looks best as a full skirt or as an accent to the classic cotton shirt.
The third must-have this spring is a controversial item. Contrary to popular belief, Bermuda shorts look great on both tall and short women. It’s only a matter of looking for the perfect pair. Keep in mind that colour and style matter if you’re afraid of looking stocky. Choose black for a slimming look and a front crease for longer-looking legs. Pair these with your favorite shoes—heeled or flat—for a great look.
