Despite the fact that elections were held in February, the Jean Royce Hall Council is still a work in progress. Following the resignation of Council Vice-President elect David Wong, the search for a replacement is underway.
“I will pick my favourite candidate, and then make a recommendation to the executive,” President Jennifer Davies said.
After winning the election in February, the Davies-Wong team was disqualified by the Chief Returning Officer of Jean Royce Hall. The team was accused of breaking several election rules. The alleged infractions included campaigning at a table without a formal booking, failing to take down an internet site by the campaign deadline and tampering with the opposing team’s poster.
The issue made its way to the AMS Constitutional Affairs Tribunal after a long series of appeals.
In April, the Tribunal concluded that procedural mistakes were committed by the Jean Royce Hall committees and cancelled the disqualification of Davies and Wong.
The Tribunal proposed recommendations to the Council that they hope will prevent this type of incident from occurring again.
The Tribunal decision, which can not be appealed, resulted in the reinstatement of Davies and Wong.
Wong has since resigned his position for academic reasons.
Davies anticipates the search for a new vice-president will wrap up in the near future.
Despite the election controversy, Davies said she is looking forward to her term as president.
“But the energy that could have gone into studying my position was instead put into defending myself.”
