Athelete of the Week

Over the span of seventeen years Joanna Hackett, number 12 on the Queens Golden Gaels soccer team, has two national championships and three provincial championships under her belt.

She also has the distinct honour of playing on a variety of touring clubs, including the Nepean United Spirits and the semi-professional Ottawa Fury, just to name a few. With a history like Hackett’s then, it was no surprise to see all eyes upon her Saturday as she darted in and out of defenders on her way to scoring both goals in the Gaels season-opening 2-0 road win over the Carleton Ravens.

Hackett’s leadership and commitment to the team was rewarded when she was chosen as a captain this year. Her extraordinary talent is exemplified during games and in practice, setting a great example for not only her teammates but for younger athletes as well. Joanna’s solid performance and remarkable attitude is what has earned her the title of The Queen’s Journal Athlete of the Week.

This veteran of five years has been described by head coach Dave McDowell, as a “determined player who has a head for the game.” McDowell often calls upon her to share half time strategies and advice that will benefit the team.

Growing up in Gloucester Ontario, Joanna, or Jo, (as her friends and coaches affectionately call her), attended Lester B. Pearson highschool. She is currently finishing her Bachelor of Education and one day hopes to teach biology and chemistry. As for the secret to her success, Joanna kept it short and sweet: “work hard”.

To hard work, Hackett is no stranger. The star midfielder also earned herself a bronze medal at last year’s CIAU wrestling championship.

You can see her leading the Golden Gaels at their next home game on Sunday, September 24 at 3 p.m. vs. Trent University.
