After a smooth summer of operations, Common Ground Coffeehouse (CoGro) started the first week of the school year with an unexpected shutdown.

CoGro’s point-of-sale (POS) machine malfunction on Sept. 3 resulted in CoGro temporarily shutting down on its first day of the fall semester, AMS Vice President (Operations) Ayan Chowdhury confirmed in a statement to The Journal. On Sept. 6, an Instagram post from the student-run campus café reiterated what Chowdhury said.

In the meanwhile, CoGro set up at the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS) Sidewalk Sale where students could stop by to win free cake, coffee vouchers, and stickers and find out what the AMS service has in store for this year.

A follow-up Instagram post confirmed CoGro would reopen to the public on Sept. 10.

The café was happy to announce they’re “so back” and set to reopen on Sept. 10 at 8 a.m. They promised a new fall menu “coming veryyy” soon, shared they will be collaborating with the Tea Room, a café in Beamish-Munroe Hall, and thanked their customers for being patient.

While CoGro was closed, the café’s Head Manager Elena Nurzynski, and and Staff Relations Assistant Manager Adam Spiwak communicated with staff, updating them on their return to work, Chowdhury said.

Chowdhury, Nurzynski, Dom Conacher, the AMS operations officer, and the AMS IT office worked together to fix the POS. The Vice President (Operations) clarified no other services were impacted by the POS malfunction.
