AMS EXECUTIVE CANDIDATES

CMM

Team Chak-Manning-Mitchell (CMM) believes that it’s time for the AMS to be a step ahead of the

problems that students face every day. We want to bring community, student wellness and sustainabilityto the forefront of the student government agenda, and we have innovative ideas to accomplish this task.

Regardless of one’s year or program of study, Queen’s is filled with opportunities for students to embrace their talents, and connect with other students who share their ions. We believe that the AMS needs to actively encourage and promote these connections between students.

Team CMM plans to create a unified, comprehensive and current online opportunity calendar, which will allow students to search for extra-curricular opportunities by subject, and maintain a list of campus events that respond to your areas of interest. Further, student wellness is a growing concern on campus, and the AMS needs to address this issue. Team CMM plans to partner with Health, Counseling, and Disability Services to develop a network of peer counselors to help students through stressful or difficult times.

Finally, the issue of sustainability has become increasingly prominent in the world at large as well as on campus, and Team CMM wants to build upon the successes of this year such as the Tea Room, the

AMS Sustainability Coordinator, the Earth Centre and the Farmer’s Market. Promoting green housing,

composting at AMS services and creating more AMS sustainability resources will help Queen’s take

the lead on this important issue. These are just some of Team CMM’s ideas to improve the student experience at Queen’s, and the full platform can be found at www.votecmm.com.

With ingenuity, insight and commitment, we want to make the AMS the most progressive student government in Canada, and ensure that Queen’s is a positive and healthy environment for all students.

TPC

We are Team TPC—Tedjo, Paterson, Craig and we know that being a Queen’s student means that you work hard. We also know that what makes Queen’s an amazing place is that we also play hard. And as your AMS exec we will place student health, accessibility, safety and environmental sustainability at the top of our agenda in order to make the AMS reflect the needs and interests of a balanced student ife. Here are a few of our solutions:

Q.LIFE. We will make broader education more accessible. This program will offer students a chance to take LSAT and MCAT prep courses at costs far less than those offered by Kaplan and Princeton Review. It will also offer classes in bartending and ASL, because we believe that accessibility to opportunity is necessary.

QCA$H. In order to reduce wait times and utilize all AMS infrastructure we will introduce a flex dollar system to be used at all AMS services. By loading money onto your student card, you will be able to swipe and pay at any AMS service.

Health, particularly mental health is a problem that has not been adequately addressed by the istration or by past AMS teams. We believe that this real problem needs real solutions

and not just talk. We will work to reduce the number of exams required for a conflict from 3-2 in a 24 hours period. This we believe will help to reduce stress and its physiological impacts on all students.

Additionally we institute a honourium program for student note-takers in order to broaden accessibility to all classes, while offering students new opportunities. We have diligently researched all of these solutions and are confident that we can and will successfully implement them

WORK HARD . PLAY HARD .

On Feb 6th and 7th vote Team TPC.

Trustee candidates

Michael Ceci

(2nd year Drama/Politics)

Listen up Queen’s! The Board of Trustees is one of the three highest governing bodies at the university. They oversee some of the most important issues that affect your time at this institution, including tuition fees. me in ensuring that TUITION FEES are equitable with the quality of education and services you receive. Allow me to work to make sure that HOMECOMING continues

to be a safe and enjoyable event for both alumni and students. RESIDENCE FEES are slated to skyrocket over the next five years, but what is improving? I will ask those questions. me and I will lobby on behalf of keeping the LIBRARY OPEN 24 HOURS during exam time. With the evaluation of

PRINCIPAL HITCHCOCK approaching, let me bring your concerns and criticism to the Board.

Since the beginning of my first year I have been actively involved in the extracurricular life of the school. I was an AMS intern in first year, and am currently an ASUS rep sitting on both the ASUS and AMS councils in conjunction with various committee positions. In my position as ASUS rep I have never been afraid to raise my voice about matters that run counter to student interests. I want to be your undergraduate voice for the next two years to bring to the forefront the issues of you, the students. I will see that lasting bonds are fostered between fellow trustees and myself so that I may better serve you.

Take charge of your Queen’s experience: me and I will pledge my full commitment to this

position. As my experience shows I am involved in student life and will NOT be another uninvolved resume padder. On February 6th and 7th VOTE CECI!

Nigel Chapman

Regarding my reasons for running for the AMS student trusteeship in this year’s elections, there isn’t, at least in the conventional sense, any sort of concrete, specific platform I can give you concerning where I, as a member of the board of trustees, plan to direct your money. Neither can I tell you abstractly (no matter how cool it might make me sound) that I’ll fight with ferocious conviction against some alleged embodiment of corporate soullessness (“the man”, if you will). The reality is that radicalism, even when it’s completely appropriate, won’t do us much good, and that specific issues just be considered as they arrive. So instead, I can only try to communicate, on some level, what

it is that I feel makes me a good candidate for the representation of our interests as students, since it’s representation, more than anything, that this position is all about. Thus, if elected, I can promise this: I will keep my ears open to your needs, wants, and worries, and I will make sure that they are voiced, and voiced clearly to those nice ladies and gentlemen who have overwhelming control over the present and future direction of our university. I am organised, rational, approachable, fairly ellspoken, and more than a little concerned about the well-being of our school. I have been highly

involved in the AMS this year as intern to the Municipal Affairs Commissioner. I would love to be given the chance to represent you as AMS student trustee during the approaching two-year term.

: we are the students of this university, and we matter. Let’s not allow the board to lose sight of this fairly important fact. And so, I would shamelessly ask this of you: vote Nigel for trustee in

the coming AMS elections!

Stephanie Kenny

One student with one voice gets one chance to speak for 16, 438 undergraduates on the 44-member Board of Trustees. This one student must make it count. The AMS Student Trustee is the only undergraduate representative on the Board. Seeing as students contribute to 16% of the University’s overall operating budget through tuition and fees, I believe that the diversity of student opinions deserves more complete representation in the governance of these resources.

As your Trustee, I will motion to increase the number of seats on the Board allotted to undergraduates so that we may have more influence over the current and future operations of our University, our home. The Principal’s vision statement foresees an increased focus on research and on building strong

ties to government and industry. I these initiatives in so far as they contribute to the sphere of undergraduate education. The primary goal of this University must be a ionate commitment to maintaining and improving the broader learning environment. If Queen’s is to research and campus development, I will ensure that students have the opportunity to directly benefit through co-op positions, SWEP jobs and mentoring relationships with renowned faculty. Sustainability must be a primary concern in all of the University’s operations. I the proposal to create a new Office of Sustainability to search for green solutions. I also believe that any sustainable institution must deal exclusively with fair-trade and environmentally conscious suppliers. Throughout my term as Trustee,

I am first and foremost committed to being accessible to you. To begin what I hope can become a egular event, I will be hosting Tea with Your Trustee at the Tea Room on Monday, feb. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Common Ground. Please bringyour questions and comments for me. Let’s talk about he school we love.

Chi Yan Lam

Chi Yan Lam’s decision to run as your next Student Trustee stems from a love for Queen’s and a ion for student government. He is tired of broken promises and lies. As the current House resident

of Leggett Hall, he has garnered the respect and of first year students. The Board of Trustees is the highest level of governing body at Queen’s. Of the 44 seats, only three seats are allocated to students. We have a key role in shaping our education, and our experience at our Queen’s. We need to act to secure our interests. If elected, Chi Yan Lam is committed to setting up a blog to update Queen’s students on prominent issues happening at the Board and encourages all to comment on it. Let all voices be heard. As your next student trustee, Chi Yan Lam is committed to you in the following ways.

1. Financial Transparency: making sure you know where your money is going and why it is spent.

2. Tuition accessibility: sustainable efforts in assistance programs from Queen’s and the Government.

3. Cultural Diversity: It’s time to embrace the differences and celebrate the common identity in all of us: a Queen’s student.

4. Advocacy in Academics: Be a key player in shaping Queen’s. It’s our education; it’s our future. Chi Yan has been an active proponent in student government and leadership in education and is nationally recognized as a laureate of the Millennium Excellence Award. He is currently a second year in the Life Sciences program concurrently pursuing a second degree in education. You need a leader who is not

afraid of speaking his mind.

Hillary Smith

Your student trustee needs to be someone that can effectively represent students on the University’s Board of Trustees. I can be that person. I am a third year arts and science student clearly dedicated to improving student life at Queen’s. If elected as student trustee, I can take my role in that improvement one step further by effectively representing the student voice. Without you, the undergraduate students, there would be no need for a voice. But, there are 14,000 of you and I would like to be the one to stand up and say, “It’s time to be heard!” I want to ensure the longevity of the Queen’s University. There needs to be greater transparency with our tuition and residence dollars. Through my position on your student government, the Alma Mater Society, as Campus Activities Commissioner I have proven to be an effective communicator and an attentive listener. I attend every Assembly where I must answer the questions of the various faculty societies and make my opinion heard. I promise, that if elected I will do the same for each of you in regards to the Board of Trustees.

I also sit on the Senate Orientation Activities Review Board (SOARB ) and this summer I strongly opposed the cancellation of house gatherings. I promise to bring that same commitment and dedication to the role of Student Trustee.

I will not make the promise to lower tuition fees because it will not happen. I’m not about empty promises. I’m about results. For a more detailed look my platform and more information about the Board of Trustees, please visit my website www.HSfortrustee.com. I strongly encourage all of you to vote for me in the elections on February 6th and 7th.
