The glitz, glamour and little gold man aren’t just for Hollywood celebrities anymore. Last Saturday, the Queen’s Oscars were held at Grant Hall to honour Queen’s students for their accomplishments in the realm of the arts. Organized and initiated this year by the Campus Activities Commission’s Arts Network, Queen’s Oscars aims to promote the arts on campus. All of the participating students were self-nominated.
A of judges consisting of Queen’s professors selected finalists for 22 categories. Categories included visual arts, film, drama, music, fashion, writing and dance, but virtually any genre of the arts was issible for the competition. Each of the 22 winners received a $500 bursary to contribute to their artistic endeavours.
Corporate sponsorship generated the funding for each bursary. Prior to the ceremony, a pre-party gala was held at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre to celebrate the arts with students, faculty, alumni and the Kingston community.
