Last weekend, Queen’s wrestler Shannon Mullins was the lone representative of the wrestling team at the national championships, hosted by the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. She lost her first two matches but won her third—her first win at the national level—en route to a sixth-place finish.
“I wrestled well in three tough matches, but my last match only lasted 15 seconds, so that was a nice way to end it,” she said. Mullins secured her place at this year’s nationals with a bronze medal finish at the provincial championships on Feb. 17. “It was a disappointing tournament for me,” she said.
Mullins said she needed to wrestle aggressively in order to collect the necessary points to move into the finals, but made an error and was upset in a round-robin match. She also showed remarkable consistency during the regular season, medaling in four of the five exhibition tournaments she entered.
She credited her training partners on the team with much of her development this season.
Mullins will finish her undergraduate degree this year but she may be wrestling for Queen’s next season. “I’m graduating this year but I’m hoping to be back for teacher’s college,” she said.

men’s volleyball
The provincial champion men’s volleyball team traveled to Hamilton this past weekend for the national championships. The Gaels were unable to hit their stride, and didn’t win a game.
“Things weren’t going great and we weren’t playing our greatest game,” right side hitter Dan McCrae said. “Our team play wasn’t quite there.” Despite the disappointing finish, McCrae still turned in two solid performances for the weekend. In their quarter-final loss to UBC, McCrae and teammate Jeff DeMeza posted teamhighs of 10 points and 10 kills each. But the Gaels were unable to hold off UBC and fell in three straight sets. With the loss, the Gaels moved into the consolation round, where they faced Laval, a team they had beaten in last season’s national championship. But this time Laval came out on top with a 3-1 victory. Again, McCrae led his team offensively with 15 points and 13 kills.
He said the team will use this year’s championship as a learning experience to better prepare for next season.
