With the beautiful weather this past week, everyone’s catching spring fever. Students eagerly waiting for the temperature to get just warm enough are hastily exposing their sun-starved toes. Already I’ve seen several pairs of sandals strolling around campus. Thinking about investing in a new pair of spring shoes? Or maybe you’re in the market for a new bag? Of course you are—after all, you can never have too many!
Let’s talk shoes. There is no happy medium when it comes to foot attire this spring—shoes are either sky-high or ultra flat.
Look for wedge sandals to give you an extra lift. Last year’s wedge had a tough time selling, but this year everyone’s going to want a pair due to increased popularity. Whether you choose the espadrille or cork wedge, these sandals will make your legs look infinitely long and feminine.
Also adding to the towering heels are the much debated platform stilettos. though, these shoes are best worn with evening attire. So if you’re hoping to make heads turns this spring—in a good way—opt for saving your platforms for the next big party scene.
In contrast to sky-high shoes, extremely flat sandals are also popular this spring. Although these terre-à-terre sandals have been dominating the streets for some time now, this spring they have an earthy twist. The strappy Roman sandal is hot this spring and will look great with flowing skirts—long or short—while conveniently making your day a whole lot more comfortable.
The flat ballet slipper also returns with a slight variation this spring: open toes. This past winter the traditional stiletto pump had its pointy toe chopped off, and the look stuck. Expect to see the traditional ballet flats with missing tips. Just : with spring come sandals and with sandals come pedicured toes—ideally.
Contrary to popular belief, your shoes don’t have to match your bag. The idea is for the whole ensemble to have a consistent look. Nowadays, a flawless match can be borderline tacky.
This spring, bags are looking earthier in fabrics such as canvas, ultra-soft leather and straw. The look is more minimal and casual than last year’s metallic and hardware-obsessed bags. However, don’t forget this spring is also about punchy and bold colours, so keep an eye out for these fabrics in bright shades. The totes and purses this spring are more structured than last year’s bohemian shoulder sack.
As previously mentioned, canvas is making a comeback, but don’t mistake this trend for an opportunity to look slouchy.
Canvas should look thick and classic—avoid the just-back-from-the- beach look.
Quick tip: beware of stains. The only disadvantage with canvas is that if the fabric is a bright colour, it can bleed onto your clothing as you carry it around. This is something you should consider when picking out your next tote.
Searching for your spring shoes and bags should be a pleasant experience, so take your time. If you’re going to invest money into key pieces, you’ll want to make sure they’re well made and as comfortable as possible.
