An undisclosed quantity of stamps was stolen from the JDUC post office early Friday morning.
“[The Campus Security supervisor on duty] discovered that the glass in the entrance door was smashed and there were tool marks and damage to the lock on the door,” said David Patterson, director of Campus Security.
Campus Security was alerted to an intrusion alarm at the post office at 4:56 a.m. The supervisor was dispatched and arrived at 4:58 a.m., “But no one was present,” Patterson said.
Dale McArthur, a post office clerk at the JDUC, was notified of the security breach at 5:15 a.m. by Campus Security.
McArthur immediately went to meet Campus Security, who were waiting with the Kingston Police at the post office.
“[We] came in, took a look at what was missing, the damage that was done,” she said.
McArthur said visible damage consisted of glass on the ground and “a big hole in the door.” “Some sheets of Canadian and United States stamps were taken,” said Patterson.
McArthur declined to reveal the value of the stolen goods, which were located in a secure area behind the counter.
“That lets people know how much we have in here,” she said.
The post office alarm system had also been disabled.
“They came in … smashed the siren,” McArthur said.
McArthur commended Campus Security for their prompt arrival on the scene.
“[The intruders] weren’t here long and security was right on top of it,” she said.
Patterson said identification officers from the Kingston Police took fingerprints and pictures. The investigation has been handed over to them.
McArthur said Physical Plant Services and a Queen’s contractor repaired the damage the same day the incident occurred. “They were probably in and out of here by noon,” she said.
A sign listing the post office’s hours now covers the area of the glass window that was broken.
Patterson said security at the Post Office will be increased.
“The manager of our department will be working with the post office to enhance security measures,” he said.
