Fashion Friday

While many students dread the month of March, with essay deadlines, thesis projects and of course the haunting thought of final exams just around the corner, I’m one of those girls that eagerly awaits its arrival every year. It’s the time of year when we’re finally given a preview of this year’s spring fashion.

The first signs of the up-and-coming fashion trends begin within the trusted pages of our most esteemed literary magazines: Vogue, InStyle or Harper’s Bazaar. Girls and boys like me cling to the pages of beautiful photographs and insightful fashion commentary—and we don’t care that these fashion tomes contain 90 per cent ments, because that’s what we want. We can’t get enough of what’s around the corner, what we’ll want to keep an eye out for, and what trends we’ll absolutely have to have.

Skin is the foundation of this spring’s most prominent look. Skin is in. Much like in recent years, the bronzed glow is back. Those of you proudly roaming around campus with beautiful tans from your Reading Week vacations already have a head start on the rest of us. Yet, before I tackle the how-to of the healthy glow, let me first explain that the key word is “healthy.” Though I know many of you tanning junkies out there won’t agree, there are some obvious problems with tanning: leathery skin, premature wrinkles and age spots, and of course, a higher risk of skin cancer. There’s such a high demand for tanning salons that this unhealthy habit is quickly becoming the smoking of our generation.

Most people do know tanning beds are terrible for their skin—and immune system, considering the billions of microscopic bacteria lurking on the warm surface of the machine—but for some reason, the high demand continues.

Fortunately, there are several healthy alternatives to the fake-n-bake approach. Before you immediately shun the thought of self-tanning creams and gels because of a botched bronzing attempt in Grade 9, consider that many products have been revamped and put back on the shelf with foolproof applications and more desirable tints. Everyone’s complexion is different, so you need to experiment with several brands before you find the perfect product for yourself. Word of caution: you get what you pay for.

Once you’ve mastered your healthy glow, you’ll be ready to look stunning in this spring’s most stylish colours. Taking a look at head-to-toe fashion for this spring, I promise to keep an eye out for the interests of those of you who may not trust your inner fashion diva, or perhaps—God forbid—your March Vogue.
