
Gaels represent Canada at Pan American Maccabi games
Jordan Balaban and Ashley Kaufman spent the winter break in Chile as of the Canadian basketball teams at the Jewish Olympics. Balaban helped lead Canada to a silver medal, vanquishing the United States en route, a Canadian first. Balaban is a member of the Gaels basketball team and Kaufman was a late cut from the women’s squad.
Chevrier signs with NFL squad
Former McGill University football star Randy Chevrier has just signed with the New York Jets of the NFL. Chevrier was drafted in 2001 and was the first CIS athlete drafted into the NFL since 1995. Chevrier is one of 12 Canadians who have emerged from the CIS into the ranks of football’s elite.
Chevrier will be pencilled in at long-snapper and special teams player.
Hockey tournament underway
The men’s University Cup hockey tournament got underway on Thursday, with the University of Alberta emerging as the early favourite. York University and the University of Ottawa make up the contingent from Ontario at the event.
UBC wins championship
Second-seeded Thunderbirds won the women’s basketball national championship last weekend by defeating the first-seeded Regina Cougars, 60-53. The victory ends a 30-year title drought endured by the Thunderbirds. UBC was guided by coach of the year Deb Huband, who was thrilled by the team’s triumph.
The victory was particularly delicious for the Thunderbirds, after having lost to the Cougars by nearly 40 points in the Canada West championship final.
Track and field title finds home in the Prairies
The University of Saskatchewan won the women’s track and field title last weekend, capturing coach of the year honours for head coach Lyle Sanderson. The University of Calgary Dinos slid into second place. The men’s title fell into the laps of the University of Windsor Lancers for the second year in a row. The Lancers strode to first prize based on the strength of four-time CIS athlete of the year Ryan McKenzie. McKenzie set an all-time CIS record for medals and managed to secure four golds over the weekend.
Carleton captures basketball crown
Carleton defended their CIS basketball title with a 63-59 win over the Xavier X-Men. The score was tied with 21 seconds remaning, but rookie Adam Falsetto sunk two from the charity strip to put the Ravens ahead for good. Osvaldo Jeanty scored 20 points to pace the Ravens and was named MVP.
