Men’s hockey snaps their losing streak, men’s rugby moves onto national semis, women’s hockey keeps winning at home, and men’s basketball’s weekend was a mixed bag.
After three consecutive years of U SPORTS silver medal finishes, the Queen’s women’s cross-country team finally prevailed as national gold medalists for the first time in school history.
The men’s rugby team won a hard-fought battle against the Guelph Gryphons to cap off an undefeated season in OUA play, securing Queen’s third consecutive provincial championship.
For Zane Grossinger, it’s always been about the team.
Women’s basketball made waves nationally last weekend when they beat both the Carleton Ravens and the Ottawa Gee-Gees in stunning fashion.
The Queen’s men’s volleyball team improved their record to 3 – 3 after coasting to an easy three set sweep against Trent University on Sunday, bringing them back to .500 for the second time in this early season.
Looking to shake off last week’s losses to Carleton and McGill, the Queen’s Gaels were at home this past weekend facing off against the No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues and No. 9 Ryerson Rams.
The Queen’s Gaels are national silver medalists after losing a hotly contested match to the Laval Rouge et Or, 22-14.
The men’s rugby team came back from their first-round bye in full force, routing the Badgers in a 40-point victory.
In what was billed as a rebuilding season, the Gaels still managed to win multiple medals at the provincial and national championships over the past two weeks.
Over the weekend, the men’s basketball team won at home against the Guelph Gryphons and then on the road against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks.

Following two solid home wins over Nipissing, the men’s hockey team suffered a winless road trip, losing matches to Carleton and McGill, 3-2 and 7-4 respectively.
The Canadian University Men’s Rugby Championship (CUMRC) is coming to Queen’s.
Under the lights, with Queen’s season on the line, senior defensive end Tyler Roy delivered a monstrous performance.
October was packed full of Varsity Club action, with 15 different teams earning a bevy of team and individual accolades. Cycling, Field Hockey, Women’s Lacrosse, and the Ultimate teams had especially big months.

Sports in brief: Week 9

Women’s rugby is on to the national semifinals, women’s basketball and volleyball swept their weekend matchups, women’s hockey and men’s basketball split their weekend games, and men’s volleyball has a tough start.
On Friday, Nov. 1, the men’s basketball team plays at home against the Guelph Gryphons, and after rigorous training throughout the offseason, the team is ready to make a comeback.
The men’s hockey team put the brakes on the upstart Nipissing Lakers’ hot start to the season, beating them 1-0 and 8-1 on consecutive nights.
