Editor’s Note: Inside ‘The Journal’s’ coverage

Dear reader,

If you’ve been keeping up to date, you’ll know there’s a lot happening in the news cycle. As has been the case for the last 150 years, The Journal is committed to delivering accurate news and promoting discourse on events that concern our readership. As we move into the new semester, here’s a breakdown of how to understand The Journal’s coverage so you can better make sense of what’s being published in your campus newspaper.

A news story is a reported story that presents facts gathered by Journal reporters. The Journal respects its role as Queen’s primary news outlet and aims to report on all things of journalistic interest to students, as prescribed by our mandate. The Journal strives to give an accurate of news and events relevant to the University while striving to uphold rigorous standards of good journalism as set out by industry standards.

Editorials are stories that reflects the view of The Journal’s Editorial Board. As laid out in section 4 of Journal policy, Journal staff meet weekly to discuss topics decided by a straight vote of the Editorial Board and reflect a consensus of the topic at hand. Each member of the Editorial Board writes one signed editorial each semester on a topic of their choosing, the signed editorial reflects the opinions of the author.

All stories under the Opinions section are written by an individual from the Queen’s community who doesn’t sit on The Journal’s Editorial Board. These pieces reflect the opinion of that individual only. The Journal accepts a diverse range of pitches from of the Queen’s community. While opinion pieces are based in fact, the facts presented are interpreted and ascribed value by the author of the piece.

While all pieces in the opinions section go through the editing pipeline and are edited by the Opinions Editor and the Editors in Chief, Letters to the Editor are shorter pieces that express a clear position on a specific issue that are usually only edited for brevity, clarity, relevance, legality, accuracy, and good taste.

The Journal accepts opinion pieces and letters to the editor as both part of its service to the Queen’s community and as a means of promoting greater dialogue on campus. They keep us agile and holds us responsible to the demands of those we serve.

While we kick off the new semester and the news cycle continues, we hope you remain engaged with us, and we encourage you to keep in touch. Drop off a note, write us a letter, and keep up to date with us online. We’ll have news hot off the press for you each week, as we have done for 150 years.

We wish you all the best this term.

Yours truly,

Asbah Ahmad and Cassidy McMackon
