For those of you who had late-night classes Monday night, you may have missed the 74th annual Emmy Awards. While award shows are normally boring—packed with filler portions of “please welcome to the stage…” and “next up on the Emmy’s…”—there are also iconic moments that cannot be missed.

Here’s a full recap of the best moments at the Emmy’s 2022.

The Z in Gen-Z stands for Zendaya

Zendaya is an absolute icon, not only for her roles in acting, but also for her beauty.

For those of you who live under a rock, Zendaya plays Rue, the lead in the popular drama series Euphoria. Rue’s character struggles with drug abuse and relapses on top of normal teenager troubles like relationship obstacles, making this role incredibly difficult to play.

Zendaya rightfully claimed the award for the outstanding lead actress. She made history as being both the youngest woman to ever win an award in this category, and the only Black woman to have won the award twice. Her first win was in 2020, for the same role.

She delivered a beautiful speech thanking her family and friends, but also the fans who have shared their stories as either being a Rue or someone who loves a Rue—meaning those who struggle with drug addiction. Zendaya noted she carries those stories with her and with Rue.

Not only was her speech touching, but her dress was showstopping.

Zendaya wore a beautiful strapless black ballgown, inspired by 50s vintage fashion and a Valentino look from 1987, worn by Linda Evangelista. The dress had a peplum bodice and a long skirt with a short train. It was paired with a silver choker necklace and small studded diamond earrings.

Endangered Species

Sherly Lee Ralph won the ing actress in a comedy series award, and to accept her achievement, burst into the Dianne Reeves song “Endangered Species.”

She sang, “I am an endangered species, but I sing no victim’s song / I am a woman, I am an artist, and I know where my voice belongs.”

Ralph is the second Black woman in history to have won this award. With grace and class, her acceptance speech spoke to the idea of never giving up on your dreams and never stopping believing in yourself. It was truly inspiring.

Acting, singing, dancing: the Emmy’s got it all!

The actresses really went all out this year.

While Sheryl Lee Ralph sang her acceptance, Jennifer Coolidge had a similar idea. Coolidge, who starred in the limited series White Lotus, won the award for outstanding ing actress in a limited series or movie.

After accepting her speech, she comedically danced her way off stage as “Hit the Road Jack” played.

Lizzo, you looked good as hell

Lizzo showed up to the Emmy’s wearing a hot-pink Giambattista Valli Couture ruffled ballgown. You couldn’t miss it—its voluminous, monochromatic nature was dramatic, eye-catching, and completely beautiful. It had a super long train which she paired with nude heels.

Obviously, the shoes cannot take away attention from this dress. The look was inspired by fashion designer Giambattista Valli, who—from what I can tell—is very familiar with ruffles and the colour pink.

It was absolutely show-stopping and deserves as much attention as her new show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls does. The show earned a handful of nominations and took home the win for the outstanding competition program. It’s about damn time. Congrats, Lizzo!

Is there an Emmy for the stylists?

The Amazing Spiderman, Tik, Tik… BOOM!, and Under the Banner of Heaven star Mr. Andrew Garfield unfortunately didn’t take home the win last night, but he definitely won in the style category.

Garfield was dressed in an all-white suit and straight-legged pants. He paired the look with round sunglasses with a bedazzled silver rim and black dress shoes. It was incredibly classy, and he looked quite charming.

Garfield wasn’t the only one in all-white, either. Similarly, Nicholas Braun, John Legend, and Seth Rogan all wore all-white suits. Were matching outfits discussed in the group chat, boys?

Not to mention the bravery to wear all-white to an event with food and alcohol moving around all night, and not be worried about spilling something on it.

Mermaids at the Emmy’s

I couldn’t finish this list without mentioning the beautiful Amanda Seyfried.

She showed up to the Emmy’s wearing a beautiful, sleeveless, Armani Privé dress. It was light pink and sparkly, tight to her body, and just long enough that it dragged on the floor as she walked without being considered a train.

The dress’s most stunning feature was the mesh sea-shelled shape that came up just below her neck. My immediate thought was she was giving mermaid energy.

It was one of the show’s stand-out pieces, no doubt.

***

The Emmy’s—as long as they may be—were definitely worth the watch this year.

Between the monumental awards, varying celebrations, and the Instagram-worthy fits, there was really no way not to be entertained watching the 74th Primetime Awards.
