Fall is fast approaching, and even though online classes might have you ready to spend the next few months sitting at your laptop in your sweats, the cooler weather is a great excuse to revamp your wardrobe and start easing back into getting dressed and ready every day. To help you find some motivation and inspiration, I’ve read up on this season’s fashion trends and compiled a shortlist of some of the simplest and most fun ways to get back in style.
Tone things down
When wading through your closet to find complementary colours feels like too much work, pick a colour you like and go to town with it. This fall, monochromatic looks will be back with a twist: according to Vogue, the emphasis is more on creating a look made up of similar tones, as opposed to a uniform single-colour outfit.
If you’re worried your head to toe tonal outfit looks a bit too much like a paint sample, try mixing things up by experimenting with different textures and layers.
Pairing a variety of different materials and creating unique silhouettes goes a long way toward giving your outfit dimension and flare. If you’re lost on where to start, consider looking at your local thrift store for some faux leather, corduroy, and oversized boxy outwear.
Cover up with nude
In of palette, centring your fall wardrobe around browns and nude colours—similar to skin tones—will be right on the mark. Beiges have maintained their foothold in the fashion world since a very nude-toned spring 2019 runway season, so don’t expect them to be going anywhere this fall.
Look for nude and brown colours in your pants, sweaters, shoes, and jackets, but also in places you may not expect like hats, jewellery, and even shades. Gloves are going to be in this season, so you might want to find a pair in a rich warm tone.
Grab a vest
They’re just like sweaters—minus the sleeves.
This season, the prep aesthetic will be back with serious vigour. Lean into the trend by sourcing a sweater vest or two to work into your rotation this fall. You can always start by digging through your dad’s closet.
They’re perfect for layering; sweater vests can be paired with a crisp collar for a more put-together, academic look, or worn over a simple t-shirt or long sleeve for a casual feel. If you want to make a statement, channel your inner Harry Styles and look for vests with wacky textures or eye-catching patterns.
this fit really says: i’ve sacrificed all my phone data in order to look at cute outfits on tik tok
Wear a mask
This fall don’t be selfish: wear a mask. Any old mask will do.
Purchasing masks that are overpriced from brands that are looking to capitalize off of the current pandemic isn’t the move. Public health isn’t a fashion trend, and if your mask doesn’t match your outfit, who cares? If you want to get creative and incorporate your face covering into your outfit, learn to make masks yourself, that way you get to choose the colours and patterns.
