Female Athlete of the Week

Sarah Marshall – Women’s Rowing

The Canadian University Rowing Championships are generally held over two days, but bad weather in Montreal last Saturday forced all of the athletes to row their races on Sunday. With all of their hard work over the summer and fall cumulating in one race day, Sarah Marshall and the rest of the women’s team didn’t allow conditions to affect them, placing third in the country.

“It was a little hectic,” Marshall said.

Marshall finished first in the lightweight women’s single and second in the lightweight women’s four. She said emotions ran high, especially following the fours race.

“In single I had a bad start but I was able to pull it together, which I was really happy about,” she said. “The four, we were going back and forth with Brock right to the end. The end was a photo-finish. We were happy with the race but it was just an unfortunate result because we were so close.”

Marshall said she preferred racing in the four instead of the single.

“[I] like having other people in the boat with me,” she said. “By myself, in the single, it’s harder to motivate yourself. You want to pull hard for your teammates”

Although the rowing season runs from late August to early November, Marshall said success can only be achieved with a full year of training. Marshall, who started rowing in grade 10, said she spent the entire summer in Kingston training for The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in August before the OUA season began in September. Even after her success at nationals, she’s already looking ahead.

“[I will] probably [rest a] week or two and then start winter training” Marshall, currently in her fifth year of study, said she is looking to start work on a masters degree in physiotherapy next year and continue rowing.
