Fourth-year defender Martha Ross had a strong weekend for the women’s lacrosse team, netting eight goals to help the team secure third place in the OUA standings. Ross tallied one goal in an 8-7 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday before scoring a hat-trick in a 13-4 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday morning and then added another four goals against McGill University in a 17-9 victory later in the day.
Ross jokingly accused her family of getting her addicted to the game.
“It’s my family’s fault,” she said. “All of my sisters play, my dad played while growing up, my aunts all played so I started as soon as I was able to. My family was definitely very active in it in the beginning, so lacrosse has always been a part of my life.”
Family ties are also the reason the Newport, MA native made her way north to Queen’s for university. Her parents are Canadian and have a house near Kingston.
“Coming to Queen’s was a good compromise between leaving home and being able to see family.”
Ross said she loves the mental side of lacrosse.
“It’s a very fast-paced game and it really depends on both player and team creativity,” she said. “You can’t really have one superstar player, you need the team to co-ordinate. It gives a lot of leeway for independence but on the other hand you have to make sure the team is always working as a unit.”
In addition to working on her own game, Ross is helping the younger of the team this year as a player-coach. She and midfielder Lisa McLaughlin run the team during the week while head coach Pat Bolland takes over on weekends for games.
Ross said she uses her past years’ experience to help guide the team.
“Experience is always very beneficial to bring to the team,” she said. “I can notice when the team is breaking down and bring them together to get us all back up to speed.”
Queen’s finished the regular season with a record of 8-4 and will face the Western Mustangs tomorrow in the OUA semifinal.
