Andrea Wadsworth has made quite an impact in her short time with Queen’s rugby. The second-year mechanical engineering student sat out much of last year with a knee injury, but has quickly become an integral part of this year’s team.
Wadsworth scored two tries in the Gaels’ hard-fought 36-30 victory over Trent in the season opener.
Wadsworth said the game was personal.
“That was definitely a bit of a grudge match for the whole team, but for me especially because they were the team that blew out my knee last year,” she said. “Winning that game was good revenge for an early-ending season last year.”
Wadsworth’s four-try performance in Sunday’s 40-0 shellacking of the York Lions propelled her into second place in overall OUA individual scoring, second to Guelph’s Brittany Benn. She said being recognized as one of the more dangerous rugby players in Ontario was special, given how little she played last year.
“To get the chance to play this year and be at the top is great,” she said. “The first-place girl is a friend of mine, so it is a friendly competition to top each other.”
Wadsworth said her performance held sentimental importance for someone in the crowd.
“My dad was in Afghanistan for three years, so he hadn’t seen me play rugby very much,” she said. “So it was exciting, and my team was very excited as well.”
Before discovering rugby, Wadsworth’s athletic aspirations were found on a different pitch.
“I actually played soccer for ten years before switching to rugby in high school,” she said. “I fell in love with it immediately, and I haven’t looked back.”
Wadsworth said she’s currently deciding on her future course of study.
“I’m not 100% sure what I want to do,” she said. “Maybe something in the biomechanical or aeronautics field of engineering.”
Next on the agenda for Wadsworth and her team is a match against the undefeated McMaster Marauders on Saturday at Kingston Field.
