Student centre officer Andy Singh is the fourth member of the AMS senior staff to resign his or her post this year.
Singh, who submitted his letter of resignation last week, said he is reg because of personal circumstances.
“I’ve had [infectious mononucleosis] for the past three months, and I’ve got to focus on my health,” he said. “We looked at other solutions, like taking a leave of absence, but at the end of the day it was a decision that I made.”
Responsibilities of the student centre officer position, created in 2004, include dealing with matters pertaining to the operation and programming of the JDUC. Singh also worked with the AMS executive to plan the Queen’s Centre.
Singh said his illness has prevented him from performing the duties pertaining to the job up to his standards.
“If I can’t give 110 per cent to everything I do, I’m just not going to do it,” he said. “I don’t want to do a half-ass job.”
Singh, who has worked for the AMS since his first year at Queen’s, said while reg was a tough decision to make, he believes it’s best for the AMS, the student body and himself.
He added he wishes to continue to volunteer for the AMS this year and possibly work for the organization again next year.
“I’ve enjoyed my time as student centre officer—it’s been a lot of fun,” he said. “I’ll miss a lot of people.”
Singh said he doesn’t believe there is a pattern behind the unusually high number of AMS resignations this year.
“I know every single one of the people who resigned,” he said. “Everyone had their own reasons, and sometimes personal circumstances just don’t allow people to continue.”
AMS President Ethan Rabidoux said the AMS Board of Directors won’t be looking to hire a new student centre officer for the interim period before the next executive hires their own staff.
“Really, by the time we get somebody in there, we’ve got an AMS election coming up in two weeks, and almost as soon as they’re elected they’re hiring a new student centre officer,” he said. “At this point it doesn’t make sense to hire somebody new.”
Rabidoux said the student centre officer salary, which is paid every two weeks, will be suspended when Singh’s resignation comes into effect today.
Rabidoux said Singh has done a good job, and wished him all the best.
“He has been absolutely priceless, especially with regards to helping us put together our recommendations for the Queen’s Centre,” he said. “We thank him for all he’s done.”
