Gael athletes off to world championships

Two Queen’s athletes will get a chance to take their game to the next level this summer after being selected to represent Canada in intenational competition.

David Clinkard, a second-year Arts and Science student from Toronto, will be a member of the Canadian team heading to Spain for the seventh annual World University Triathlon Championships.

The competition runs from July 2-3, and the athletes will be competing in Olympic-level distances—15 km of swimming, 40 km of biking, and 10 km of running.

Clinkard is a four-year triathlon veteran, and has been a solid performer with the Queen’s club. At the last Ontario University Championships, he placed first among the male competitors.

Daniel Nauth, a star pitcher with the Gaels’ baseball team, will head to Chinese Taipei for the World Baseball Championships with the Canadian team. Nauth, who is currently pitching for the Oshawa Dodgers of the Intercountry League, graduated from Queen’s Law this year.

The Brampton native led the Gaels to great successes over the past two seasons, bringing home two provincial championships as well as silver and bronze medals from the CIBC National Championships. He was also awarded the Queen’s Cy Young Award for Top Pitcher of the Year by his teammates this past season, and was also named the tournament MVP and CIBC pitcher of the year at the 2003 nationals.
