Braving the less than stellar weather conditions, the Queen’s Golf team played in three tournaments last weekend, finishing among the top five each time and narrowly missing the top spot at the Carleton Invitational.
The Gaels started their weekend at the Wilfred Laurier Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 21. Playing at the Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo, the team placed fifth in the field of 10 teams. On Sunday the Gaels competed in their own invitational tournament, finishing third.
They played the Carleton tournament on Monday, placing second.
The Gaels started their weekend without their top player, Patrick Forbes.
“Patrick had some stitches in his right foot that weren’t quite healed,” head coach Bert Kea said. “We thought we’d sit him out rather than re-injure him.”
With Forbes out, the Gaels team was comprised of Sean Dainty, Rich Cotton, Gilbert Schiller and Brent Brandham. The team finished seven strokes back of first place McMaster.
“We had three or four incidents of [triple bogeys],” Kea said. “When we’re in trouble, we want to keep it to a single [bogey]. That’s the main thing we’re working on as a team.”
The team showed improvements during their home tournament at the Amherstview Golf Club. The course was windy and storm warnings were issued for the area.
“We can’t really blame the weather,” Kea said. “It affected all the teams.”
Despite the difficulties, the Gaels put together a good team effort to place third overall. They were one shot off second place, but 11 strokes off the eventual winners, the Waterloo Warriors.
Playing in their third tournament in four days, the Gaels traveled to Belleville for the Carleton University Invitational at Black Bear Ridge Golf Club.
“It’s probably one of the best courses in Eastern Ontario,” Kea said.
Gaels Mike Hossack and Rich Colton tied for third in individual play, both shooting a 78. Queen’s finished in second place, two strokes back of Laurentian.
“We were right in there,” Kea said. “We were within a couple strokes of winning it.”
