Hockey winless in opening weekend

Men lose 5-4 to Brock, tie York 3-3

The men’s hockey team got off to a slow start with a win and a loss during their home opening weekend. The Gaels lost Friday night’s game to Brock and settled for a tie with York on Saturday.

The Gaels found themselves in a hole early on Friday night, falling behind 3-0 in the first period. But before the period’s close, Brady Olsen scored for the Gaels on the power play. Down 3-1 in the second period, the Gaels killed an early penalty and goals from Jeff Ovens and Cameron Chapman tied the game.

Brad Walford scored a power play goal early in the third period to put the Gaels up by one.

They held the lead until the halfway mark of the third when Brock’s John Labelle scored to tie the game.

With nine minutes remaining, Labelle scored again to secure the win for the Badgers.

Labelle led all scorers with a hat trick and an assist. Queen’s Brad Walford led the Gaels with a goal and two assists.

Missed opportunities in overtime by both Queen’s and York led to a 3-3 tie on Saturday against the York Lions. York opened the scoring just three minutes into the first period and extended their lead 57 seconds later with a second goal.

The lions scored their third goal while at a two-man disadvantage. Forward Brady Olsen converted a power play opportunity 44 seconds after that to cut the lead to one at the end of the first period.

Andrew Gilbert and Jaime Brock each scored a goal in the second to take the lead going into the third period, but York managed to tie the game with six minutes remaining. Queen’s nearly lost the game when a York player hit the crossbar with less than a minute to play in regular time.

Gaels’ goaltender Ryan Gibb made 44 saves on 47 shots for the tie and Gilbert, Brock and Ovens all had two points for the Gaels. The team is away next weekend to face Guelph and Waterloo. Both opponents sit at 1-1.
