Honorary degree recipients announced

Former Prime Minister, Editor of Harper’s among those selected

The following people will be receiving honorary degrees from the University at this spring’s convocation:

Jean Chrètien, LLD

May 27, 2:30 p.m.

Chrètien is a former Prime Minister of Canada. He was involved in Canadian politics for over 40 years. During his time in politics he served as the Minister of National Revenue, Indian Affairs and Northern Development, Industry, Trade and Commerce, Finance, Justice and Energy, Mines and Resources. He also served as parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson. He received a law degree from Laval University.

Mary Williams, DSc

May 28, 9:30 a.m.

Williams is the Director General for the National Research Council Institute for Ocean Technology. She received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Simon Fraser University in 1975. She was the first woman to receive this degree. She was the Chair for Women in Science and Engineering until 2002.

Morris Milner, DSc

May 28, 2:30 p.m.

Milner is the Vice-President of Research at Bloorview MacMillan Centre, which works with disabled children. He is a Professor in the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Rehabilitation Science, Surgery, and the Institutes of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and Medical Science at the University of Toronto. He received a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Gordon Gray, LLD

June 3, 9:30 a.m.

Gray is currently the Director of Rio Algom Limited. He is a chartered ant and was the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, and now an Honorary Chairman of Royal LePage. He received his BComm from Queen’s in 1950.

Lewis Lapham, LLD

June 3, 2:30 p.m.

Lapham is the editor of Harper’s Magazine. He is the author of several books of essays, including The Wish for Kings, Money and Class in America and Hotel America. He has been a reporter for the San Francisco Examiner and the New York Herald Tribune and has worked as a syndicated newspaper columnist. He attended Yale University and Cambridge University.

Maria Klawe, DSc

June 4, 9:30 a.m.

Klawe is the Dean of Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. She is also a professor in the Department of Computer Science. Klawe’s research has focused on the use of interactive multimedia technologies in aiding in the teaching of mathematics, reading, and science and has developed computer games to help in educating girls in these fields. She was also the Dean of Science at the University of British Columbia. She received her bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Alberta.

Gordon Wells, LLD

June 4, 2:30 p.m.

Wells is currently an advisor to the Government of Jamaica and the Senior Advisor to the Contractor General. He has also been the Chairman of the Jamaica Broadcasting Commission. He is a Sub-Lieutenant of the Royal Canadian Navy. He graduated from Queen’s in 1955 and also attended Cambridge.
