Katie McKenna Women’s Soccer
As the Homecoming weekend came to a close, the Queen’s women’s soccer team held onto first place by a single point over Carleton in the OUA, due in large part to the stellar play of Katie McKenna. After a 2-1 loss to Ottawa on Wednesday, the Gaels are now in second place, one point behind Ottawa.
Currently in her third year in ConEd, the Oakville native is starting her second season as keeper for the Golden Gaels. This year McKenna posted back-to-back shutouts for a total of four clean sheets in five games.
“I’ve got to give full credit to my backline. The three of them never come off but they don’t get recognized,” she said.
The Gaels, ranked seventh in the country, played two away games last weekend, first against the Nipissing Lakers in North Bay. They won by a score of 4-0. The second game against Laurentian would prove to be more difficult, as the Golden Gaels offence was held off the sheet and settled for a 0-0 draw.
“It’s easy to get shutouts when the best strikers in the OUA are held to only a few shots every game,” she said.
Despite the loss to the Gee Gees, Queen’s proved it could run with the best of them.
“Ottawa is a fantastic team,” McKenna said. “They’ve shown that every year. But the next time we play them it’ll be an even better battle.”
Bryn Davies
Men’s Rugby
Men’s rugby player Bryn Davies has been an integral part of his team’s 3-0 start to the season and their current first place standing in the OUA.
In the team’s season opener against Brock, scrum half Davies was instrumental as he successfully took two penalty kicks in a low scoring 11-6 win. “This was a big game for us, although we would have liked to have scored more points,” he said.
Davies helped lead Queen’s to a victory over the Windsor Lancers on Homecoming Saturday. He scored one try and converted two kicks en route to a 24-5 victory in front of a full Homecoming crowd at Kingston Field, including a large number of rugby alumni.
“It was good to show the alumni that we’re developing well as a club,” Davies said.
Queen’s played Trent on Wednesday in a rainy affair in Peterborough. The Gaels won by a score of 36-17 to stay undefeated and on top of the OUA. In that game, Davies helped Queen’s to victory by scoring a try and converting three kicks.
Davies, who is studying Applied Science at Queen’s, is originally from Schomberg, ON. and is playing his third season with the Queen’s Rugby Football Club.
