Jennifer Held
Women’s Lacrosse
Jennifer Held, a fourth-year life sciences student and midfielder for the Gaels women’s lacrosse team, was not only instrumental on the field in the Gaels’ three victories at McGill last weekend, but was an integral part in getting the team ready to play the University of Toronto, Brock and McGill. Held is not only a former OUA Rookie of the Year and OUA MVP but also an assistant coach for the women’s lacrosse team. Even though she was defending the other team’s top players, and expected to score goals and motivate her teammates at the same time, Held takes the job in stride.
“It’s not too difficult because of my role on the team” she said. “It’s my role to be vocal on the field and to share my opinions and experiences.”
Held, who expects big things from the Gaels this year, is also surrounded by a very talented team. Held is usually the one whose name appears on the score sheet, as she tallied 11 goals and added three helpers in the three victories this weekend, yet she knows the team is the reason for her success.
“We are out there everyday working,” she said. “We are all doing this for the team.” This team returns many players from last year and Held did not hold back in her optimism for the team.
“I know we have the ability to win,” she said. “In order to prove ourselves we have to work hard.”
Held has been playing lacrosse since she was 14 and has had the opportunity to play for Team Ontario. She has also played for four years with Queen’s and, each year she has played with the team, she said they have grown closer together.
As the team has grown as a unit there has been a great sense of anticipation, she said.
“Motivation to play well comes from within ourselves,” she said. “Everyone gets really excited about the games.”
Patrick Forbes
Men’s Golf
Golf team rookie Patrick Forbes has earned Athlete of the Week honours by winning the Windsor University Invitational this past weekend, shooting a 73. This helped lead Queen’s to a gold medal in the team competition as well.
He was also the top player in the Queen’s golf team’s qualifier, with a combined two-round score of 144.
Forbes boasts impressive credentials. He’s ranked among the top 24 junior players in Ontario, and the top 50 in all of Canada.
At the CJGA Nike Golf Junior Championship in Thornhill in August, he shot an impressive 71 in the second round to take the lead. He went on to win the event. It was especially sweet for Forbes, because the event was played at his home club, Bayview Country Club.
He also placed seventh at the American Junior Golf Association Boyne Highlands Junior, where he shot a final round 69 to reach the top 10.
He will play an important role at this weekend’s Queen’s Invitational, which will be played at the Loyalist Country Club Estates.
At the age of 18, Forbes will be a big part of Queen’s golf for years to come as they attempt to restore their supremacy in Ontario and gun for the OUA Championship.
