Bert Kea replaces Scott Mullin as head coach of the Queen’s golf team, a moonlight position he has adopted in addition to the assistant professional post at Amherstview Golf Club. Amherstview will host the 36-hole qualifier to determine the five players and two alternates, and of the two dozen or so who are expected to vie for the spots, Kea expects some new recruits might challenge some of the stalwart veterans.
“Brad McMillan should be a nice addition to the team,” said Kea of the first-year student from Calgary, who placed t sixth at the Alberta Junior Championships this summer.
Bryan Uchikata, top finisher at the OUAs last year, will be back as well, along with Craig Sinclair — who won the season opener at Camelot in 1999 — and Brian McAlpine, an Iowa State scholarship transfer who assisted Kea teaching winter golf clinics this past February.
The six-event circuit opens September 18 and 19 in Ottawa, with tournaments at Eagle Creek and Camelot golf clubs, and winds down in London on October 15 and 16, with Western hosting this year’s OUA championships at Forest City National Golf Club.
While many top high school prospects are typically lured south with full scholarships, the calibre of play is still high.
“In talking with the Carleton coach,” said Kea, “we came to the consensus that a team scoring average around 75 should be right there at every event. I’m hoping we’ll be good enough to do that, and we’re going to work this fall to get to that point.”
