NDP signs vandalized
Dear Editors,
On Jan. 14 my friend and I took time away from studying to brave snow, wind, and freezing temperatures to canvass part of the Ghetto for local NDP candidate Rob Hutchison. Several people we spoke to asked to have an NDP sign displayed on their frozen lawn. In total, we placed over a dozen signs over two streets in the heart of the Ghetto. The next day I was disappointed to see that many of the signs we installed were removed and/or vandalized—and even more upset that [it seemed] only NDP signs were affected. More tolerance and respect please.

Take action and help the homeless
Dear Editors,
I moved to Kingston just this September, and although I have been here hundreds of times before, it was not until my first week here that I noticed something I had never noticed before: poverty and homelessness. Walking up and down Princess Street, I was swamped by the number of citizens asking for spare change. It was so depressing. Every trek downtown to get food or to see a movie was always overshadowed by the fact that while I am eating three meals a day and living indoors, fellow human beings are not eating, and not living indoors right here in my new backyard. It was heart shattering and eye opening.
So, here is my request to all Kingston residents: this winter, please give generously to those in need. the local shelter or food bank and see what you can do to help. This winter, please don’t ignore the “problem” that is sitting at our doorstep.

Letter ‘inadequate reading’ of issues
Dear Editors,
RE: “Queen’s image hurt,” (Journal, Jan. 13, 2006).
I would like to respond to Blair Halchuk’s (Sci ’02) letter to the editor in the Journal of Friday, Jan. 13.
In it, Mr. Halchuk displays not only an embarrassingly inadequate reading of recent student government issues, but a fundamental lack of understanding and arrogance regarding them.
Mr. Halchuk: mistakes in student government do not equate to flipping over cars. Stop embarrassing Queen’s students and graduates by making far-reaching and inappropriate assertions that insult the readers of the Queen’s Journal.
If you’d like for me to elaborate, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I’ll be happy to explain.
