Thank you, coach
Dear Editors,
As a member of the Queen’s women’s cross-country team, the lack of event coverage this season was disheartening and frustrating. As our season came to an end this weekend, it’s worth mentioning we had one of our best seasons yet.
Two weeks ago, both the men and the women brought home bronze medals at the OUA Championships in St. Catharines. To finish the weekend, our coach Curt Bolton was awarded with the women’s coach of the year award.
But statistics, results and awards aren’t and shouldn’t be a complete reflection of our coach. They’re only half the story. What can’t be shown in the results or times is the unbelievable guidance and generous our coach offered us.
Curt is the most dedicated coach and running fan there is. He isn’t only concerned about our physical needs, but acts as a father figure, individualizing our training and makes sure our health and happiness always comes first. He and his wife of 37 years, Rita Sue, worked together to drive us to the course when a bus wasn’t provided, had us over for pasta dinners before races and gave us excellent goal coaching advice. They taught us to believe in our capabilities as runners and to see the good in all that comes our way. Curt was there during our disappointments, laughter and shared in our celebrations.
Not only is Curt legendary at Queen’s running, he’s an outstanding citizen in the Kingston community. Even in his “retirement” he volunteers at Martha’s Table, at camp during the summer and dedicates an infinite amount of time to Queen’s Athletics.
As the cross-country season slips away with our accomplishments fairly unnoticed, I feel it’s my duty and my honour to give mention to someone who has made such a difference for the women’s team. A coach of the year award simply can’t do him justice.
Thank you, Curt, from the bottom of our hearts.
