Rookie midfielder Nathan Klemensic, describes the soccer scene in his hometown of Trenton, Ont. as “small, not a lot going on”. Despite starting the sport early in his childhood, Klemensic said he lacked a competitive environment prior to university. He tried out for the Queen’s varsity soccer team in September and succeeding in walking-on, acquiring a starting role. Last Friday against the third-place Carleton Ravens, the small-town kid proved his value. With the Gaels down 1-0 in the first half, Klemensic slotted home his first goal of the season to tie the score. He added a second goal in the second half, steering the Gaels to 2-1 win.
Klemensic said he’s relieved to have finally scored after 11 scoreless matches.
“[I’m] just glad to get the monkey off my back” he said. “The older guys were really glad for me, it made the game easier and I was finally able to relax.”
The second-place Gaels head into the playoffs next Wednesday. Klemensic said the team’s confident and eager to get going. “We are feeling really good,” he said. “No reason why we can’t take [#1 ranked] Toronto if we face them.” In addition to an exciting first season, Klemensic said the adjustment to academics has felt fairly fluid.
“Mandatory study time for rookies helps a lot,” he said.”We are forced to work, and in a good environment”.
