Men’s basketball forward Mitch Leger gave two fitting performances last weekend during the last two varsity games in Bartlett Gym. Against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night he racked up a season-high 20 points and 20 rebounds, matching that performance on Saturday night against the Ryerson Rams with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
The high scorer said he appreciated all the shown by the crowd during the weekend, which included his mother, step-father, father, step-mother and fianceé.
“It’s always nice to be able to contribute,” said Leger. “There were a lot of friends and family and people from the community that I’ve known for a while, so it was nice to have their there. They were very happy for me and the team in general.”
While Leger itted that the team was not thrilled with their performance during the first half of the season, he said they have begun to pick up the pace.
“The first half was a little disappointing,” he said. “But we’re 3-0 so far in the second half, playing a lot better and being a lot more consistent than we were during the fall semester.” The six-foot-six forward, who carried the Olympic torch through Kingston in December, said the future is bright for the Gaels.
“If we keep going this way we’ll be good,” he said. “It’s better to be playing like this in this part of the year, to battle for a playoff spot.”
Leger said it was disappointing more students were not around to see the final game in Bartlett Gym, but was glad that so many of the community were able to come out and witness the victory.
“Being able to get a win out of it was a really good way to close the gym”, he said.
Leger said he was introduced to basketball when he was 10 years old.
“My mom me up in grade five or six because she was trying to give me something to do other than hockey, which was my dad’s ion.”
Leger, who’s in his fourth year of eligibility, said that he isn’t sure what he wants to do after graduation, but that he would jump at an opportunity to keep playing basketball.
