Mason and Tahiri new ASUS exec

Scott Mason and Irfan Tahiri were elected to the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS) executive Wednesday night.

Surrounded by friends at a Barrie St. house party, Tahiri, Artsci ’14, and Mason, ArtSci ’14, grew visibly demoralized as they waited for the results, an hour after initially expected.

Finally, with incumbent president John Whittaker ArtSci ’14, and vice-president Tom Jacobs, ArtSci ’14, in tow, as well as last year’s president Rico Garcia, ArtSci ’13, and vice-president Duncan Peterson, ArtSci ’11, a procession burst through the doors just before 11 p.m. bearing the good news.

“Whether or not you voted for us, we’re going to make the society better – we hope to do it with you,” Mason said in his victory speech to an exuberant crowd.

“I am so humbled right now,” Tahiri said, emotional and rambunctious both before and after the results.

“Our first day is of course getting DSCs [Departmental Student Councils] elected… we’ll be sending a copy of the ASUS budget to every ASUS student”, Mason said.

Competing team Allison Williams, ArtSci ’14 and Zaeem Anwar CompSci ’14, were humble in defeat. They waited out the decision at a friend’s house while watching episodes of 2 Broke Girls.

They said they see a bright future for the Society under Mason and Tahiri.

“When we saw their platform, we knew that no matter what, ASUS was going to be moving forward in a positive direction,” Williams said.

“They ran a great campaign and I think we’re fortunate that it was as polite as it was.”
