The Computing Students’ Society (COMPSA) kicked off Valentine’s Day with the results of its presidential election.
Hugh Tuckwell, CompSci ’26, was elected next President of the Society, winning 267 votes in a contested race against Rehr Vafadar, CompSci ’27, who received 186 votes. A total of 166 eligible students voted, representing 11.4 per cent of the COMPSA student body. There were 15 abstentions
President-elect Tuckwell shared his excitement, thanking every student who voted in this election.
“I’m honoured to be elected as COMPSA’s next President and look forward to representing the computing [student] body here at Queen’s,” Tuckwell said in a statement to The Journal.
Throughout his term, Tuckwell hopes to expand professional development, increase outreach, and improve the Society’s internal operations.
With no candidates stepping forward for the Vice-President (Operations) and Vice-President (Student Affairs) positions during the initial nomination period, a second executive election timeline is in place, shared by current COMPSA Vice-President (Operations) Josh Cowan in an e-mail to The Journal on Feb. 14.
The new nominating period will run from Feb. 23 to March 1, followed by a campaign period from March 2 to 8. If multiple candidates are nominated, a debate will take place on March 10. Voting for the vice-presidential positions will occur over March 11 and 12.
If no candidates submit themselves for either role, the onus will fall on the current COMPSA executive team to nominate students.
