A unique nursing research and learning centre—the first of its kind in North America—is to be established at Queen’s University.
The latest Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) collaboration, an international research institute, will be established at Queen’s in partnership with the School of Nursing and the Practice and Research in Nursing Group.
“[The centre] will open the door for the nursing community to work interactively with the academic community,” said Dr. Margaret Harrison, director of the Queen’s Joanna Briggs Collaboration (QJBC).
The collaboration collects studies done on health care practices, for use by those in the health care industry and researchers.
The QJBC will receive $350,000 from the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. Harrison said one challenge the collaboration will face is to find a way to sustain funding after a three year period.
Harrison also said the program will benefit both undergraduate and graduate students.
She foresees the creation of student internships. Students could pursue their own research initiatives and actually contribute to the QJBC in the future.
“Many other faculties in the health sciences will be interested in the synthesis of research,” Harrison said.
There are several other JBI institutions around the world, including locations in China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Spain and Scotland.
The Joanna Briggs Institute was established by the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide in 1995.
It began in response to the mounting need for a place where all collected data and research concerning health care practices could be compiled and stored.
