Next court date set for Queen’s student
A Queen’s student and former Olympic athlete will make his next appearance in court on July 21 after being charged with one count of possessing child pornography and one count of making child pornography available.
John David Burnes, ArtSci ’10, was arrested on Feb. 4 as part of a province-wide crackdown on child pornography. The sweep resulted in a total of 93 charges against 31 people.
His lawyer, Clyde Smith, appeared in court May 5 to determine the date for Burnes’s next court appearance.
Burnes, who represented Canada in archery at the Beijing Olympics last August, wasn’t present at the remand hearing and didn’t respond to the Journal’s request for an interview.

University to upgrade security in residences
The University may install surveillance cameras in residence lobbies and add peepholes to room doors to increase student safety following the sexual assault of a female student in her Victoria Hall residence room on Mar. 27.
Kingston Police arrested a 21 year-old Queen’s student in connection with the assault on Mar. 28.
Director of Residence Life Elizabeth Leal Conrad said residence staff, Campus Security and the University istration are looking at the costs of upgrading residence security and will have finalized plans by the end of summer.
“They’re targeted for safety in general,” Leal Conrad said, adding that residence staff will launch an education campaign to discourage high-risk behaviour, such as going out late at night and not locking residence room doors.
“We’re hoping to do it in such a way that it will cause students to think about their personal safety no matter where they are.”
