Club cooks up a fire in the JDUC

On Sunday night, the Asian Cooking Club’s potluck dinner was crashed by some uninvited guests, whose arrival was more than welcome.

At 7:10 p.m. the Kingston Fire Department responded to a call from the International Centre in the JDUC.

Acting captain Richard Vasko said a pan of grease had been left unattended on the stove in the International Centre’s kitchen and caught on fire.

He said the fire was put out before the time he arrived.

“Our mission here was basically to remove all the smoke that had accumulated.”

By the time it was put out, the fire had begun to char the cupboards above the stove, Vasko said.

“It’s hard for me to put a number on [the damage],” he said.

“It’s done some damage, but I’d say it’s minor. It could have been a lot worse.”

Firefighters spent just under an hour and a half clearing the smoke out of the building.

Students and staff were allowed back in at about 8:30 p.m.

Angelita Wong, ArtSci ’10, said no one noticed the fire until they saw the smoke.

“We were just eating and smoke was coming out of the kitchen.”

Film students get warning for reckless costume changes

Halloween came a little early Sunday night when police tracked down a group of film students who were driving erratically through the Mackintosh-Corry parking lot while filming a video skit.

Campus Security Director Dave Patterson said someone reported twice seeing a group of students drive quickly into the parking lot, stop to change their false facial hair and wigs and then drive away again. The witness recorded the license plate number and called the police.

Police found the car empty and parked on University Avenue and waited for the owner to return.

Patterson said the students were let off with a warning.

“They were spoken to about the seriousness of the way they were driving and how suspicious it looks, disguising their appearance, et cetera.”
