Students rally in national Day of Action
Thousands of students from across Canada rallied Wednesday to protest tuition fees and called on
provincial governments to freeze or lower tuition.
About 16 Queen’s students bused to Ottawa to participate in a march and rally on Parliament Hill, said Andrew Sadler, Society of Graduate and Professional Students vice-president (external).
Sadler, who organized the bus trip, said he was happy with the turnout of Queen’s students, under the circumstances.
“It’s a pretty big commitment to pick a day to go up to Ottawa,” he said, adding that the sub-zero
temperatures were “pretty frightful” to be protesting in.
“We’re glad we got 16 people to come and take the time out to do that.”
Sadler estimated there were about 5,000 students rallying at Parliament Hill in total.
“It’s an issue students are concerned about, and particularly in Ontario with the provincial election coming up this fall … it’s important for politicians to know it’s an issue they’re going to have to pay attention to.
“Students are watching and they’re going to see what the government’s going to do and the students are voters who are going to be able to hold the politicians able for what they do or what they don’t do.”
