Campus Theft

Twenty desktop computers purchased by Queen’s were stolen from a computer lab in the basement of Jeffrey Hall on July 9. The total value of the machines was about $27,000.

Campus Security said security cables were cut by the thieves.

The break and enter has forced ITS and Campus Security to reconsider the physical security of its on-campus computer labs.

“ITS is working with Physical Plant Services (PPS) and campus security … on measures to prevent future occurrences,” said David Patterson, director of campus security.

Since the incident, PPS has installed latch plates on the doors of the computer lab.

“Latch plates are quite successful in preventing someone from jimmying the door open,” Patterson said.

PPS are considering the installation of a security system as a heightened security measure.

These alarm devices are already used in several campus buildings, Patterson said.

The Kingston Police have no leads so far as to the identity of the thief.

A thief broke into the international center on July 25 and stole $115 in cash and $110 in phone cards.

The thief entered the centre by removing a glass window from the door.

Physical Plant Services have since repaired the door of the centre.
