This weekend, the 24-hour mixed media event Tidal Mass took place at NGB Studios, in a dilapidated former warehouse at 12 Cataraqui St. Local musicians played music continuously from midnight until 5 a.m., large-scale sculptures were on display and silent films from the 1920s and ’30s were shown.
The titular installation piece, by local artist Don Maynard, filled a 2000-square foot space. It was created using almost 2, 300 eight-foot long fluorescent light bulbs, arranged into 16 overlapping sets of “waves” illuminated from underneath.
The event, which drew crowds of dancers and art-lovers throughout the night and following day, was constantly changing. Musicians came and went, Maynard updated Tidal Mass by turning the house lights off at 3 a.m. and natural light further changed perspectives as the sun rose and set.
