Concert Preview: The Organ w/ Gentleman Reg Oct. 13 @ The Grad Club
The Organ will be rolling into Kingston for its third-ever visit to the Limestone City this coming Thursday. Playing a show at The Grad Club with Gentleman Reg, the five-piece all-girl band will go over familiar territory from their album Grab That Gun, which was released last year on Mint Records.
Don’t get too excited, though, because you know the band won’t be. If you’ve seen them before, you’ll understand—their apathetic stage presence leaves something to be desired every time, and hardly makes you want to dance.
Go for Gentleman Reg’s performance, instead. Gentleman Reg deserves an overgrown audience for his set. His music will warm the cockles of your heart, and send you swaying to the syncopated beat of his rhythm guitar.
A Toronto native and member of The Hidden Cameras, Reg Vermue has released three albums under his pseudonym. His latest release, Darby and Joan, showcases Vermue at his most versatile and impulsive, which gave rise to quite a lot of critical acclaim.
And darn it if he isn’t a charmer.
While Gentleman Reg has made an impact with a truly original sound, The Organ has simply rehashed old Smiths material. The Smiths sounded good in the ’80s, thanks to Johnny Marr’s repetitive guitar chants and Morrissey’s bellowing voice. But Morrissey has written very few, if any, uplifting lyrics in his lifetime. And although their music is catchy, it’s somewhat dismal.
Gentleman Reg, on the other hand, is a good catch. So go see him and dance your face off, then find the solution to The Organ’s bleak quality at the bottom of glass.
