A mustang is a free-roaming horse, but when they gallop into Richardson Stadium this Saturday, the Gaels won’t give up anything for free.
On Sept. 16, Queen’s historic rival will be looking to trample them like they have every game since 2013. The last time these teams met at Richardson Stadium was for the Yates Cup during the 2021-22 season, where Queen’s fell 29-0.
After coming off a big 42-9 win against U of T last Saturday, the Gaels are working towards a fresh outcome ahead of their game against Western.
“Anytime you’re playing a really good football team that has the ability to beat you in a lot of different ways, you’ve got to start fast, that’s something that our team is preparing for,” Head Coach Steve Snyder said at a press conference at Richardson Stadium Thursday.
The Western Mustangs have made 15 Vanier Cup appearances and have achieved four OUA Championships in the last five seasons. Queen’s hasn’t won an OUA championship since 2009, ending a drought going back to 1978.
However, going into the game, the Gael’s mindset isn’t one of fear.
“Ultimately, it’s going to come down to just being aggressive in all three phases [and having an] attacking mindset,” Snyder said. “We’ve got to find little advantages all over the field.”
As of Sept. 12, U SPORTS ranked Western second and Queen’s seventh for the best football teams in the country. Six thousand spectators are expected to be in attendance, helping push the Gaels towards victory, according to Snyder.
Kickoff begins at 3:00 p.m.
