After consultations with student groups, Queen’s is launching an anti-hate campaign.
The campaign, Together against hate, was announced on Sept. 3 and promotes mental health services such as EmpowerMe, a 24/7 virtual mental health platform, and informs students on how to book an appointment with Student Wellness Services. Together against hate also offers campus and online educational resources like hate, anti-oppression, and anti-racism modules.
The new awareness campaign provides Queen’s community with information on how to report instances of hate, harassment, or discrimination by filing a complaint form. Details about the campaign can be found on the Human Rights and Equity Office Instagram and on digital screens on campus, like in the ARC.
“We created this campaign to promote an inclusive, diverse, and safe campus community in which respect, understanding, and collaboration are foundational to our shared success,” Stephanie Simpson, vice-principal (culture, equity, and inclusion) said in a Queen’s Gazette article.
“We all play a role in challenging hate and promoting safety and respect for all of our campus community,” shared Simpson.
Before the University launched the campaign, Simpson consulted a variety of student groups, including the AMS Executives and Social Issues Committee, Hillel Queen’s, an organization that creates a community for Jewish students on campus, and Queen’s University Muslim Students Association, an association that fosters community amongst Muslim students on campus.
Simpson also spoke with representatives from the Human Rights and Equity Office and Queen’s Anti-Hate Advisory Group, made up of students, staff, and faculty who provide board guidance to the University istration on effective approaches to hate prevention and response.
“I want to express my deep gratitude to Queen’s community , particularly students, who met with our team to develop this campaign,” Simpson said. “Their personal insights and experiences on this sensitive but important topic helped us build outreach that will connect more and more students with crucial resources and s.”
