Queen’s students can now add a queer component to their degrees.
On Wednesday morning, the University Senate unanimously approved an application from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences for a certificate program in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies.
istered by the Institute of Women’s Studies, the certificate program will be one of only two such programs in Canada, the other one being the sexual diversity minor at the University of Toronto.
Sue Hendler, director of the Institute of Women’s Studies, said she first noted the interest for this type of program several years ago while participating in a forum on queer scholarship.
“Students are now being asked to know about diversity in the society in which they’ll ultimately function,” Hendler said.
“This is a great opportunity for students and faculty who have an interest in these topics.”
The certificate program is open to students from all faculties. Students are required to complete one course in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies, and choose from a selection of other courses covering a wide range of socio-sexual topics from law to art history.
In addition, students must complete a one-term placement as a volunteer at a community or university agency focused on sexuality, with a clear component of their work pertaining to queer issues. According to Hendler, the volunteer aspect of the program is its most crucial part.
“Students will get more out of their education if they have hands-on experience with the people they’re learning about.” Hendler anticipates an enrollment of five to 10 students a year, with the number to increase as the program gains acceptance.
“The issue is not that there’s a huge demand, but that the demand does exist,” said Hendler, who has already received calls from interested students.
“The importance of this program is bigger than numbers.”
