After a whirlwind of elections, the Residence Society (ResSoc) has hit an obstacle.
A day before election results were set to come out, the Judicial Affairs Office (JAO) announced in an Instagram post on Feb. 13 that they had launched an investigation into a complaint regarding the ResSoc executive elections, which was received on Feb. 11. As a result, the announcement of the 2025-26 ResSoc executive will be delayed.
The JAO is the investigative branch of the Judicial System of the AMS, responsible for handling category I non-academic misconduct cases, such as property or alcohol related incidents, and suspected policy infraction cases.
As part of the process, an interim measure was approved by the Judicial Case Manager Yiyang (Bruce) Lou, Judicial Disputes Manager Bella Quitazol, Judicial Committee Chair Oluwamisimi Oluwole, as well as the AMS Secretariat Sylvie Garabedian to withhold the announcement of election results until the investigation is complete.
“At this time, I can’t disclose any additional information about the nature or details of the complaint to protect the privacy and confidentiality of the judicial proceeding,” Garabedian said in a statement to The Journal.
Garabedian acknowledged the time-sensitive nature of the election and said the timing of the complaint, arriving just before Reading Week, has made it difficult to meet with all parties involved. With AMS offices closed next week, further delays are possible.
Under the Judicial Policy, suspected infractions must be addressed within 25 business days. The case is tentatively expected to be resolved within two weeks after Reading Week, though the timeline may change as the investigation unfolds, according to Garabedian.
