Even though it’s only November, the Christmas season is approaching fast. With the festivities amping up, it’s time to get into the holiday mood with some festive Christmas music to match the winter feels that are quickly approaching.
If you’re bored of listening to the same classic spiel of songs for the whole festive season, make sure to spice up your Christmas playlist with some of these songs. You’ll want to listen to them the whole season long.
Whether you’re staying snug indoors in a cozy pair of pajamas or braving the cold for a winter morning walk, these songs are the perfect soundtrack to accompany whatever activity you’re doing. From feel-good tunes to more mellow tracks, there’s something for everyone!
“Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Phoebe Bridgers
A twist on the classic festive song, Phoebe Bridgers’ angelic voice adds so much to an already brilliant feel-good track. Bridgers is one of my all-time favourite artists, so this track remains one of my first picks to listen to when getting into the Christmas spirit.
Her delicate way of singing is easy to listen to, comforting, and all-around captivating, making this revamped classic a go-to this holiday season.
“Ice Dance” by Danny Elfman
This is a beautiful instrumental track from the soundtrack of Edward Scissorhands. I love listening to this when I’m studying during the cold winter months because of its soft and mellow nature.
So, during exams, you can concentrate and feel festive at the same time.
“re:stacks” by Bon Iver
Whilst it is not necessarily a Christmas song, I have to recommend “re:stacks” for its brooding, dark, wintery vibes. Consistent with many of Iver’s songs, the lyrics are heavily influenced by heartbreak, longing, and unfulfilled desire.
While this seems dark and gloomy, it emulates just the opposite. “re:stacks” is a beautiful track that can’t be ignored on your Christmas playlist.
I can’t recommend Bon Iver enough. His songs have such powerful lyrics and are instrumentally brilliant, making for music to which I can’t stop listening.
Caution: you won’t be able to stop listening either.
“My Only Swerving” by El Ten Eleven
Another instrumental on the list, “My Only Swerving,”is just one of those tracks that makes you feel like you’re the main character in a movie when you’re walking to it.
It’s quite literally the perfect backing track. It’s subtle, with a soft and airy-sounding guitar that makes you feel like you’re floating when you listen to it.
If you need a song to relax to this Christmas, make sure you listen to this one.
“Wintering” by The 1975
From The 1975’s latest album, Being Funny in a Foreign Language, “Wintering”brings unique lyricism and an upbeat sing-along vibe that trademarks many of the band’s best songs. Perfect for the festive season, “Wintering” is sprinkled with a Christmas twang.
The first time I listened to it, I loved the chorus, and after I’d listened a few more times, I was singing along every single time. A catchy chorus is the number one requirement for Christmas carols anyways, right?
“Cold December Nights” by Boyz II Men
This song has such sad, painful lyrics, and I recommend it because of its ability to convey the despair of experiencing heartbreak during Christmastime. The harmonies in this song are beautiful, and the various voices of the of Boyz II Men blend perfectly to create a wintery track.
Besides, we need another Christmas heartbreak song to accompany the classic “Last Christmas.”
“Yule Shoot Your Eye Out” by Fall Out Boy
I first started listening to this song when I was 14 or 15, and I discovered it when it wasn’t even Christmas. It’s one of those Christmas tracks that’s good to listen to at all times of the year.
I’m a big fan of Fall Out Boy, and I love how this song combines their trademark rock and punk style vocals with festive instrumentals. I haven’t come across another song that has this same mix, and that’s why it remains a firm favourite for me.
