On Oct. 4, the AMS office of the Secretariat Maya Morcos has succeeded her name from the ballot prior to voting days.
The rector election was set to take place on Oct. 1-2. Due to the last-minute retraction, election ballots were not sent to the student body.
“On the evening of [Sept. 30], Rector candidate Maya Morcos alerted the AMS elections team of her intention to withdraw from the election. The AMS Elections team, SGPS, Assembly and University Secretariat will be working together to determine the best course of action for putting out a call for a new Rector,” Laura Devenny, AMS Secretariat, wrote in an email to The Journal.
The Rector serves as confidential for all Queen’s students. Some of the Rector’s duties include serving as the representative to Queen’s for matters pertaining to education on behalf of all undergraduate and graduate students and attending various ceremonial functions.
“We wish Maya the best and thank her for engaging with the position over the election season,” Maddie Zarb, AMS Director of Communications, wrote in a press release on behalf of the AMS Secretariat office.
“Maya ran a great campaign and connected the position of Rector to many students.”
