Curling starts with a bang

The men’s and women’s curling teams started strong at the first OUA event of the season last weekend in Waterloo. The men went 3-0 with 10-6 wins over the Laurentian Voyageurs and the Trent Excalibur and a 9-3 triumph over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The women beat the Varsity Blues 9-3 and edged the Excalibur 5-1, but fell 8-3 to Laurentian.

McVicar, Scriver shine in North Bay

The men’s and women’s nordic skiing teams competed in the inaugural OUA race of the season last weekend in North Bay. Julie McVicar turned in the best performance on the women’s side, finishing ninth overall on Saturday and fourth overall on Sunday. Athlete and coach Ian Scriver was the top Gael on the men’s side, placing 25th overall on Saturday and 37th overall Sunday. The team’s next race is Jan. 31 in Ottawa at the Eastern Canadian championships.

Women’s squash falls on weekend

The defending OUA champion women’s squash team had a tough time this weekend in the OUA crossover tournament in Toronto. They started off strong Saturday with a 4-2 win over the McMaster Marauders, but lost 6-0 to the Western Mustangs Saturday afternoon and fell 6-0 to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday. Lulu Burstyn, Diana Chang, Alison Wardlaw and Christal Laroque recorded wins for the Gaels.Their next tournament will be the OUA championships at the University of Western Ontario on Feb. 13 and 14.

Commerce Charity Cup takes to the ice Saturday

Commerce students will take to the ice Saturday against business students from McGill University, the University of Western Ontario and York University to raise money for the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at Kingston General Hospital. The event will take place at the K-Rock Centre downtown from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ission is free, but donations are welcomed and a silent auction will also be held.
