Arthur makes waves for swimming team

Queen’s swimmer Jen Arthur led the way at last weekend’s OUA championships in Toronto, winning the school’s only medal and qualifying herself for the Canadian Senior National Championship this summer.

Arthur, whose qualifying time of 28.82 seconds shattered the previous Queen’s record by almost a full second, finished with a bronze medal in the 50-metre butterfly race that qualified her for the CIS Championships Feb. 22-24 in Vancouver.

Her time was only 0.21 seconds off the gold-medal pace. She also placed seventh in the 50-metre freestyle and barely missed qualifying for the Canadian Olympic Trials, missing the cut by just over a quarter of a second.

Arthur’s result helped the women’s team finish 11th overall, while the men’s team placed eighth. The host team, the University of Toronto, captured both overall titles.

The men’s team had two top-10 finishes from captain Chris Kreutzner, placing ninth in the men’s 50-metre butterfly and picking up 10th in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Along with the CIS championships, Arthur will also compete this summer in Calgary at the Canadian Senior National Championship.
