Rowers claim gold
Gael rowers Nick Pratt and Katya Herman won gold in the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships at York University Sunday. Pratt won the senior men’s lightweight race, while Herman claimed the senior women’s lightweight title.
Fellow Gaels Rares Crisan and Rob Ballard also did well, placing second and fourth respectively in the men’s under-23 lightweight race.
Curling teams clinch berth in OUA Finals
Queen’s men’s and women’s curling teams both locked up spots in the OUA Championships with strong performances last weekend at Trent University. The men’s team opened the weekend with a loss to the Western Mustangs, but recovered to beat the Brock Badgers, the Waterloo Warriors and the Windsor Lancers. The women lost their first match to Western and dropped a close game to Waterloo on the final rock, but rebounded to beat Windsor 9-8 and Brock 7-1.
The men finished the regular season 5-2, while the women wrapped up their season with a 4-3 record. Both teams placed third in their leagues, securing berths in the OUA Finals at the University of Western Ontario on Feb. 16 and 17.
Two squash players named OUA First Team All-Stars
Rebecca Hazell and Michelle Craig of the Gaels’ women’s squash team were among the six OUA players named to the first all-star team today. Hazell and Craig led the Gaels to a 12-12 record this regular season, good enough for the fourth and final playoff berth out of the five OUA teams. The men’s side also finished third in the seven-team OUA but didn’t receive any all-star nominations despite a 22-14 record. Both teams head into this weekend’s OUA championships at Brock University in St. Catherines.
